The Independent Police Investigative Directorate (IPID) is currently unraveling the circumstances surrounding the heartbreaking death of businessman Mlondi Gasela, who was fatally shot during a police operation in Margate, KwaZulu-Natal.

Accusations are swirling as members of the South African Police Service (SAPS) face claims that their operation was conducted illegally, despite the police maintaining that their actions were justified.

Brother Speaks Out: A Family's Grief

Banele Gasela, brother of the deceased, has shared harrowing details of the fateful day on January 5, 2026. According to Banele, both he and his brother questioned the police's legitimacy after they allegedly responded to their home without proper identification or search and arrest warrants.

Reports from News24 indicate that upon arrival, police knocked on the sliding door of their property. When Gasela's wife asked for identification, the police forcefully broke down the door. Mlondi, hearing the ruckus, rushed to protect his children but was met with chaos. Banele claims that as Gasela confronted the police, they opened fire without any warning, resulting in his brother's tragic death. Allegedly, during the incident, police officers removed CCTV hard drives and planted weapons at the scene.

Contrasting Narratives: Police's Defense

According to SAPS, they acted upon intelligence reports indicating the presence of unlicensed firearms within the residence. They assert that their entry was announced, but claimed that upon their entrance, the occupants initiated gunfire, leading to a return of fire from the officers. However, the incident remains under scrutiny by the IPID.

IPID's Broader Investigation Efforts

The IPID has previously conducted significant investigations in KwaZulu-Natal, including a notable probe against KZN Provincial Commissioner General Nhlanhla Mkhwanazi, accused of obstructing a drug arrest. In April 2025, Mkhwanazi responded to claims of interference, alleging that he was unfairly targeted for promoting legitimate police operations.

Call For Transparency

In another instance, IPID faced criticism for failing to disclose reports, citing a technical glitch as the reason behind missing deadlines to make findings public. The unfolding story of the Margate incident raises pressing questions about police accountability and transparency.

As the investigatory processes continue, families and communities are left reeling from the impact of this tragic event.
