The City of Tshwane has hit the reset button on power to Thami Ndlala Mall and Hotel Apartments, citing illegal reconnections as the reason behind the latest disconnection. The property has been struggling under a staggering electricity debt exceeding R600,000. But that’s just the tip of the iceberg, as officials have also uncovered that the mall owes over R1 million in unpaid water bills.
On 12 January 2026, city inspectors discovered that despite being disconnected for non-payment on 17 December 2025, the power supply had been unlawfully restored. This prompted the city to act decisively once more, disconnecting the property again and advocating for legal action against the owners of the property if illegal reconnections continue.
With Thami Ndlala’s other property, Ndala Dynasty, also in the city’s crosshairs due to a whopping R2.3 million in electricity arrears, the stakes have never been higher. Ndlala, a businessman known for his lavish lifestyle alongside his wife, media personality Lerato Kganyago, has long attracted public attention, especially now that the unpaid bills have come to light.
Why Did the City Cut the Power?
Tshwane Mayor Nasiphi Moya confirmed the disconnection by stating that the property had accrued serious debt, with officials taking a hardline approach on illegal power reconnections. Inspectors noted that more than R1 million is owed in water bills alone, significantly inflating the total debt owed to the city. The city is taking a very firm stance, promising that illegal connections will no longer be tolerated, and further actions might follow.
Social Media Reaction
The news has sent ripples across social media, with many users taking to platforms to question why the outstanding debts had not been settled. Given Ndlala’s extravagant displays of wealth online, commenters were quick to express their disbelief. User @cindy_maryline shared:
“I don’t get why he is doing this. From the grand gestures he always does for his woman, surely he has money. Unless there is something we don’t know!”
Noticing the irony, @Yknip1 remarked:
“He hired a whole stadium but can’t keep his business’s power on.”
Others weighed in, some calling for accountability, with @Bra_Lopz stating:
“He must be arrested, even though he is arrogant.”
Kganyago Confirms Her Ownership
In the midst of this controversy, Kganyago has publicly clarified her ownership status concerning Thami Ndlala Mall and Hotel. Earlier, she had to address reports alleging she was merely a front for the hotel management. In a strong statement shared on Instagram, Kganyago affirmed:
“We can confirm Ms Kganyago is the owner of AMOUR Restaurant as well as part-owner of the 12 On Hillel property. We dispel all information reported otherwise as false and malicious.”
This situation further escalated interest in the couple's financial dealings, especially as Kganyago recently shared plans to broaden her investments, including acquiring additional properties.
