The Independent Workers' Union of Great Britain (IWGB) and Rockstar Games have engaged in a heated exchange following a preliminary tribunal hearing. During this session, the IWGB requested a judge to provide interim relief for the developers dismissed from Grand Theft Auto 6.
Interim relief serves as a financial support mechanism for individuals awaiting a complete hearing. If the judge approves the motion, the terminated GTA 6 workers will be reinstated on Rockstar's payroll, likely until a conclusive decision is made.
In a statement released by the IWGB, they expressed hopes that the tribunal would provide essential relief for the workers significantly affected by what they described as Rockstar's harsh union-busting tactics, which left many without income, security, and, in some cases, the right to remain in the UK.
"Even the smallest leak of any information relating to our products and practices can cause major commercial and creative damage"
The IWGB stressed, "Regardless of this interim hearing's outcome, we are confident in the strength of our case against Rockstar Games. We firmly believe that Rockstar acted unlawfully when it abruptly dismissed 31 of our members, and we look forward to the full tribunal hearing in court."
Rockstar terminated 34 employees in November of the previous year, including 31 in the UK, coinciding with union organization efforts. The company attributed the dismissals to alleged gross misconduct, stating that these individuals had leaked confidential information outside the company via Discord.
These dismissals generated significant public outcry, leading to protests outside Rockstar North's Edinburgh studio and drawing attention in the UK Parliament, including remarks from Prime Minister Keir Starmer who labeled the firings as "deeply concerning".
Rockstar has firmly denied the allegations, asserting that the actions taken were necessary to protect highly confidential information. They emphasized the importance of maintaining strict confidentiality, noting that even minor leaks could inflict serious commercial and creative harm.
In their rebuttal, Rockstar clarified that the dismissals had nothing to do with union activities, maintaining a policy of zero tolerance for unauthorized information sharing.
