Tupac Shakur’s earliest demo tape, along with handwritten lyrics from his teenage rap crew Born Busy, is officially on the auction block in New York! This incredible treasure, part of a collection curated by his close friend and collaborator, Ge-ology, captures Tupac’s raw talent from 1988 when he was just 16 years old.
Recorded in a Baltimore basement, this previously unheard cassette showcases Tupac freestyling under the name MC New York. Alongside fellow crew members Gerard 'Ge-ology' Young, Darrin K Bastfield, and Dana 'Mouse' Smith, young Tupac displayed his undeniable creativity and lyrical prowess.
“This wasn’t meant to be a performance or a release,” said Ge-ology. “That tape is one of the earliest moments of Tupac being documented, before the world knew who he was.”
Tupac Tapes Headed For Auction
In a groundbreaking approach, Tupac recorded raw acapellas that Ge-ology would later transform into intricate beats, demonstrating their innovative artistic process. Ge-ology has protected this demo for years, believing that now is the time for it to be cherished as a vital piece of cultural history.
The auction, hosted by Wax Poetics, officially went live on January 15. This follows the platform’s recent success with a rare 1988 Mariah Carey demo sale, heightening excitement around collectible music memorabilia.
This auction offers enthusiasts a rare glimpse into Tupac’s early artistry, long before he became a titan of the hip-hop genre. As collectors eagerly await bidding, other pieces of 2Pac memorabilia have also recently attracted jaw-dropping prices. Notably, the BMW he was driving the night he was shot hit the market for a staggering $1.75 million, fully restored to its pre-shooting glory.
With this auction, the tragic history of hip-hop intersects with high-end collectibles, providing an opportunity to own a crucial part of musical heritage.
