Victor Gomes Joins FIFA Referees Committee as SAFA Chairman
South African Football Association (SAFA) Referees Committee chairman, Victor Gomes, has been appointed to the FIFA Referees Committee.
Gomes made history as the first South African to officiate the Africa Cup of Nations final, where Senegal triumphed over Egypt in 2022, establishing himself as one of the most respected referees before retiring post-2022 FIFA World Cup in Qatar.
He has subsequently applied his expertise and leadership to various refereeing organizations across the globe.
“I am happy to contribute to the game on the continent and to the betterment of African refereeing,” he stated on the SAFA website.
“Thank you to FIFA, CAF, and SAFA for entrusting me with this big responsibility.”
In addition to his new role, Gomes serves as a FIFA Referees development officer and assessor, a VAR and Technical Instructor, the vice-chairman of the CAF Referees Committee, and a member of the IFAB Technical Advisory Panel.
SAFA President Dr. Danny Jordaan commended Gomes on his appointment, highlighting the significance of joining a committee led by esteemed former referee Pierluigi Collina, who officiated the 2002 FIFA World Cup.
“I am pleased to congratulate Victor on this new journey. We look forward to following him on this new chapter,” said SAFA President Dr. Jordaan.
SAFA continues to maintain a strong presence in international football structures. Dr. Jordaan himself has been appointed to the FIFA Men’s National Teams Competitions Committee, recognized as a crucial body overseeing all FIFA men’s tournaments, including the FIFA World Cup and FIFA U20 World Cup.
Moreover, SAFA Chief Medical Officer Dr. Thulani Ngwenya is serving as a Doping Control Officer (DOC) during the ongoing FIFA Under-20 Men’s World Cup in Chile, showcasing the involvement of SAFA in significant international events.
Dr. Ngwenya is based in Rancagua, Chile, with the main venue for his responsibilities being Estadio El Teniente.
