Warning: Excessive Gaming May Harm Your Health, Study Reveals

As gaming enthusiasts, we often indulge in lengthy gaming sessions. However, a recent study indicates that playing for extended hours could negatively impact our physical, emotional, and mental health.

A study published in the Nutrition journal highlighted the dangers associated with 'excessive gaming.' Conducted by Professor Mario Siervo from the Curtin School of Population Health, the research involved 317 students aged around 20 from five Australian universities. The findings revealed that individuals who gamed for over 10 hours per week faced a higher risk of dietary problems, sleep deprivation, and weight gain.

Professor Siervo observed, "Students gaming up to 10 hours a week had similar dietary, sleep, and weight profiles, while those exceeding 10 hours showed significant differences. "

It’s crucial to note that the sample size of 317 is relatively small, affecting the study's breadth.

Participants were categorized into 'high gamers' (10+ hours), 'low gamers' (0-5 hours), and 'moderate gamers' (5-10 hours). Results indicated that high gamers witnessed a decline in diet quality and an increase in obesity compared to their lower gaming counterparts. Specifically, high gamers had a median body mass index (BMI) of 26.3, categorizing them as overweight, unlike the more balanced BMI scores of the other groups.

Moreover, while all three groups reported poor sleep quality, moderate and high gamers exhibited more severe sleep disruptions attributed to their gaming habits.

Siervo explained, "Each additional hour spent gaming was linked to a decreased diet quality, even when considering stress and lifestyle factors. While this study doesn't establish a direct causal link between gaming and health issues, it highlights a concerning connection between excessive gaming and health risks. Moderate gaming appears acceptable, yet excessive play may hinder healthy behaviors like balanced eating, adequate sleep, and physical activity."

On a brighter note, Siervo mentions the possibility of breaking unhealthy habits before they become ingrained. "University habits can persist into adulthood, but healthier practices like regular breaks, avoiding late-night gaming, and opting for nutritious snacks can enhance overall well-being," he adds.

For the gaming community, it's essential to reflect on our habits and find a balance.
