West Ham United are facing a potential drop to the Championship if they can't reverse their current poor form. The Hammers have not secured a victory in their last 10 league encounters and find themselves seven points away from safety after losing to relegation rival Nottingham Forest.
On a rainy Tuesday evening at the London Stadium, West Ham initially took the lead only to concede an 89th-minute penalty, which Morgan Gibbs-White converted to give Nottingham the win.
West Ham transfer target may be put off by relegation threat
Nuno Espirito Santo, reflecting on the match, seemed dejected while Konstantinos Mavropanos was spotted sitting on the match ball, clearly disheartened. Mavropanos has had a consistent season, nearing 100 appearances since his summer arrival.
Despite his contributions, the club is eager to strengthen their defense, with Charlie Cresswell, formerly of Leeds United, reportedly on their radar according to Sky Germany.
Cresswell debuted for Leeds against West Ham, tasked with marking Michail Antonio. He has since moved to Toulouse, where he has excelled in Ligue 1 and helped England's Under-21s secure consecutive European Championship titles.
While West Ham's interest may signal a possible return to England for Cresswell, his reluctance to play in the Championship could complicate matters, especially given the club’s precarious standing in the Premier League. Cresswell aims to advance his career, rather than step back into the Championship, where he last played for Leeds.
In the January transfer window, West Ham have already signed attackers Pablo Felipe and Taty Castellanos, who both debuted in the loss to Nottingham Forest. The club hopes these new additions can propel them to safety amidst ongoing exits including those of Niclas Fullkrug and Callum Wilson.
