West Ham United find themselves in a precarious situation on the pitch, suffering from a 10-match winless streak that places them seven points adrift of safety in the Premier League.
The challenges extend beyond the relegation battle, as Lucas Paqueta’s future looms large after the club managed to retain him during the summer transfer window. The Brazilian midfielder’s desire to leave has escalated into a critical issue at the London Stadium.
Paqueta reportedly wishes to return to Brazil, with Flamengo keen on securing his signature.
Although Paqueta has not performed at his best this season, losing him would deprive Nuno Espirito Santo of one of the few players capable of changing the course of a match with individual brilliance.
Fabrizio Romano indicates that personal terms with Flamengo have already been agreed, and discussions with West Ham are expected to resume shortly, as the Brazilian club senses that an exit could become a reality.
“Personal terms [were] agreed days ago,” claims Romano. “Flamengo [are] set for new talks with West Ham over the next few days as [they] feel [the] English club can now open doors to an exit.”
Letting Paqueta go during such a critical period would pose a significant challenge for Nuno, particularly as relegation looms. The player has additional motivation to leave, as West Ham’s players face a 50% salary reduction clause should they drop to the Championship.
This situation complicates the club's chances of attracting new talent, and for Paqueta, this might be one of the last substantial contracts of his career. He is under pressure to act quickly to avoid financial repercussions if relegation occurs come June.
A transfer this winter seems beneficial for the player but could be detrimental for West Ham on the field. Nonetheless, Paqueta’s personal deadline may not be as urgent as it appears, considering Brazil’s transfer window extends until March 3rd, allowing time for potential negotiations even after a deal with Flamengo is brokered.
