Williams Confident Nigeria Will Defeat Benin in World Cup Qualifiers

Bafana Bafana Captain Ronwen Williams Confident of Nigeria's Victory Over Benin

Ronwen Williams, captain of Bafana Bafana, remains optimistic about South Africa's chances of qualifying for the FIFA World Cup. He firmly believes that Nigeria will triumph over Benin in their crucial West African derby on Tuesday.

For South Africa to keep their qualification hopes alive, they need Nigeria to secure a victory against Benin, coupled with a win over Rwanda in their World Cup qualifying match at Mbombela Stadium.

Bafana’s aspirations took a hit following a disheartening goalless draw against Zimbabwe, a match that was vital for maintaining pressure on group leaders Benin, who previously defeated Rwanda.

The path is now straightforward for Bafana: they must beat Rwanda while hoping that Nigeria can outperform Benin in Uyo.

Nigeria's opportunity to qualify still stands should Bafana falter against Rwanda, provided they secure their victory against Benin.

“Of course, people have doubts now,” stated Williams, reflecting on South Africa's previous standings. “Everything was clear for us to qualify — until FIFA deducted three points for an ineligible player. But I still feel everything will work out in our favour.”

Williams reminisced about the mixed memories tied to Mbombela Stadium, particularly recalling South Africa's unfortunate elimination during the 2012 Africa Cup of Nations qualification due to a misunderstanding of the rules.

“Maybe this is our chance to correct the wrongs from that time. I’m positive, I have faith,” he added. “Now it’s for Nigeria to play Benin — and honestly, I can’t see Benin getting a result against Nigeria.”

He emphasized the significance of their upcoming match against Rwanda: “They are the only team that has beaten us this campaign, and we carry that motivation into the game.”

Williams encouraged the fans to maintain their support for the team as they embark on this crucial match, expressing a strong belief that fortunes may turn in their favor, particularly as they return to Mbombela. “Now it’s up to us to believe, to fight, and to show that we are a team.”
