Bafana Bafana captain and goalkeeper Ronwen Williams remains hopeful despite a three-point deduction.
The 1996 African champions faced a setback as FIFA imposed a three-point deduction following the fielding of suspended midfielder Teboho Mokoena in their game against Lesotho in March.
Although the match concluded with a 2-0 victory for Bafana Bafana, FIFA's decision to deduct points and allocate them to Lesotho has put the team in a tight spot.
This penalty has dropped Bafana Bafana from first to second in the standings, where they are now tied on 14 points with leaders Benin, albeit trailing due to goal difference.
Nevertheless, Williams remains focused on the upcoming games, stating, “Obviously, it wasn’t good news, but there’s nothing much that we can do about it. We need to control what we can, and that is the next two important games. I think we still have an opportunity, a big opportunity to qualify.”
As they prepare to take on Zimbabwe and Rwanda in South Africa, Williams underscores the critical nature of these matches.
“These two games will still be more important, and we need to get the job done,” he said. “We haven’t spoken about the deduction because we can’t change it; instead, we need to focus on our next two games.”
The captain also noted the team’s commitment to securing qualification. “You can see the energy that we brought to training this week; it’s a team that means business,” Williams remarked.
Highlighting the gravity of the situation, he added, “We know what is at stake; it’s coming down to it now.”
Williams expressed confidence in the team’s abilities, emphasizing, “Nothing needs to change; we just need to be the team that we’ve been in the last two or three years. We’ve been growing, we’ve been so good, but we need to finish on a high note.”
With a clear focus on controlling their own destiny, Williams affirmed, “We want to qualify, and it’s in our hands. We are determined to get the job done.”
As the team gears up for their crucial matches against Zimbabwe and Rwanda, the resolve of Bafana Bafana remains strong. Despite the recent challenges, Williams' optimism is a positive indication of the team's spirit as they strive for World Cup qualification.
