Wissa's Journey: From Injury Struggles to Key Contributions for Newcastle United

The DR Congo striker was brought in to lead Newcastle United's attack after a turbulent summer, particularly amid tensions surrounding Alexander Isak’s move to Liverpool. While Wissa was seen as a direct replacement for the outgoing Callum Wilson, it was essential for Newcastle to quickly find those goals that Isak used to deliver.

Having scored 19 goals in the previous Premier League season for Brentford, with none from the penalty spot, Wissa was viewed as the ideal candidate to shoulder the scoring burden, even taking on the prestigious number 9 jersey upon joining Newcastle.

Wissa's Champions League Dream Unfolds

Newcastle invested £55 million in acquiring Wissa on transfer deadline day, a significant commitment considering earlier attempts to sign Joao Pedro, Hugo Ekitike, and Benjamin Sesko had fallen through. Initially, the club had estimated his worth to be around £20 million less than what they ultimately paid.

Unfortunately, before he could make an impact, Wissa suffered a knee injury, sidelining him before he even stepped onto the training pitch. As the months rolled by, concerns mounted over the effectiveness of the signing. Wissa, however, remained focused on his recovery and the initial value he was meant to bring.

Though he had managed to net two goals prior to facing PSV Eindhoven on Wednesday, recent key misses had raised doubts about his long-term contributions. The pressure intensified as Newcastle aimed for success in the Champions League, knowing that a win would secure a play-off place and a significant match against Paris Saint-Germain loomed.

In front of an intense home crowd, Wissa delivered, scoring an early goal and providing an assist in a 3-0 victory, showcasing his energetic performance. Finally, Newcastle witnessed the talent they had secured.

“There’s more to come, for sure, because I’m not 100% yet, but I’m close to it,” Wissa stated after his impactful outing. He recognized the ongoing adjustment required to integrate fully into the squad. “I’ve always felt at home, but I need time to adapt to my game and with the players.
