Zimbabwe head coach Michael Nees asserts dignity in World Cup qualifiers
Despite having no hopes for qualification in the 2026 FIFA World Cup, Zimbabwe’s coach Michael Nees remains resolute that his team will not aid South Africa in their pursuit of points. The Warriors are committed to protecting their dignity in the upcoming match.
Although eliminated from contention, Zimbabwe has demonstrated a competitive spirit by establishing their training camp in Durban from Sunday, a day prior to Bafana Bafana arriving in the coastal city.
The two teams will clash at the Moses Mabhida Stadium on Friday at 18:00. While Zimbabwe sits at the bottom of Group C with four points from eight matches, South Africa still harbors realistic hopes of qualifying.
Bafana Bafana requires six points from their remaining games against Zimbabwe and Rwanda, while also relying on Benin to falter in their matches.
Coach Nees has made it clear that his team will not extend any favors to South Africa, despite conducting their home games in the same country.
“Everyone must take responsibility for their own circumstances; we have to focus on ourselves,” Nees stated.
South Africa’s road to qualification became more challenging after a points deduction by FIFA due to fielding an ineligible player during a prior victory over Lesotho. The sanctions shifted Bafana from the top to second place in Group C.
“If they want, we can swap positions — I have no problem,” joked Nees, before emphasizing the need for his team to concentrate on their own development. “We still have the opportunity to build belief and showcase our strengths.”
Despite being unable to qualify, Nees believes that the Warriors possess a talented group that mixes experience with youth, indicating potential for improvement as they prepare for future competitions.
While only group winners automatically earn a spot in the World Cup, runners-up have a chance to claim a playoff berth, which adds an element of complexity to the qualifiers.
