Zimbabwe have parted ways with head coach Michael Nees after the Warriors failed to win a single match during the 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifiers.
Zimbabwe finished bottom of Group C with just five points from ten matches, drawing five and losing the other five. They managed to score only five goals while conceding 12 in the campaign.
The Warriors earned respectable draws against Nigeria and Bafana Bafana, the latter result coming in their penultimate fixture. That draw left South Africa in a difficult position, as they needed a win to secure qualification for the FIFA World Cup finals.
However, Bafana Bafana eventually booked their ticket to the World Cup with a 3-0 victory over Rwanda two weeks ago at Mbombela Stadium.
Zimbabwe, meanwhile, ended their qualifying campaign with a defeat to Lesotho, who finished second from bottom in the group.
Despite Nees’s dismissal, the German coach — appointed in July 2024 — did manage to guide Zimbabwe to qualification for the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON), which will take place later this year in Morocco.
Zimbabwe have been drawn in the same AFCON group as Bafana Bafana, Angola, and Egypt, and the Warriors are expected to have a new coach in charge by the time the tournament kicks off.
