Mamelodi Sundowns Midfielder Confident of Team Comeback After Injury
Mamelodi Sundowns midfielder Themba Zwane expresses his eagerness to re-establish himself in Miguel Cardoso's squad following a significant injury layoff. The talented player has been sidelined since suffering an Achilles tendon tear during a 2025 AFCON qualifier against Congo Brazzaville in October last year. Initially expected to return later in the season, the 35-year-old has been training diligently with the team.
Zwane acknowledges the challenge ahead in securing his spot within the squad, especially with the Club World Cup slated for June and the continental competition approaching. “It’s difficult [to get into the team], but it goes with the belief if you believe in yourself. I have been fighting for my position since joining Sundowns from Aces,” he stated.
The veteran midfielder reports progress in his recovery, mentioning that he can now run pain-free, though he acknowledges he is not yet fully healed. “I’m happy at the moment, I’m running outside [on the grass], I’m not feeling any pain, it’s just that the Achilles is tight at the moment. But overall, I think so far so good,” Zwane noted.
As Sundowns prepares for a crucial clash against Orlando Pirates at Loftus Stadium, Zwane has offered his thoughts on how the team can secure a victory. He emphasizes the importance of pressure and consistency as the club aims to maintain their lead at the top of the table.
The two teams are heading into what promises to be an intense match-up, with Sundowns currently holding a six-point advantage over the Buccaneers, who have a game in hand.
