AmaZulu coach Arthur Zwane says that after refreshing the squad with youthful talent, he fully expects his team to pay “school fees” because of the inexperience of some players.
The standout performer in AmaZulu’s 2–0 win over Siwelele at Moses Mabhida Stadium was 23-year-old Athini Maqokolo, who claimed the Man of the Match award on Saturday.
Maqokolo, playing on the wing and drifting inside, opened the scoring in the first half when he was released through on goal and calmly clipped the ball over the onrushing Ricardo Goss.
He completed his brace in the second half, showing further composure as he fired past Goss for his second of the match.
It was an impressive display from the youngster, who joined AmaZulu from Chippa United.
“We have refreshed the squad with lots of energy to strike the right balance,” Zwane said.
“Some of the youngsters are trying to get themselves up to the level of those who are already performing well.
“So we expect them to make mistakes—some will be costly, and some they might get away with. But that’s the only way to learn and grow.
“What’s important is that we keep collecting maximum points, because that will boost the confidence and belief within the squad.”
The victory over Lehlohonolo Seema’s team lifted AmaZulu to fifth place on the Betway Premiership table with 21 points from 12 matches.
What will come as welcome news for Usuthu is that they will not play outside KwaZulu-Natal before the league breaks for the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations next month.
AmaZulu face KZN rivals Richards Bay at Umhlathuze Sports Ground on Friday, followed by Golden Arrows at King Zwelithini Stadium on 3 December. They have already won one KZN derby this season, beating Durban City at Moses Mabhida Stadium last month.
“There are no easy games in the PSL,” Zwane added.
“What happened previously might not repeat itself. I’m not saying we don’t want to win, but they also remember that they can’t afford to lose against us again.
“It won’t be a walk in the park. We have to dig deep and bring our A-game to get maximum points against Richards Bay.
“Both games, including the one against Arrows, will be tough. We just have to plan properly, see how things go, and take it from there.
“But of course, we want to win those matches. Previous results count for nothing. The 90 minutes is where we must do the talking as a club and as players.”
