AmaZulu Coach Arthur Zwane Discusses Contract Issues Similar to Chiefs’
AmaZulu coach Arthur Zwane draws comparisons between his team's situation and that of Kaizer Chiefs regarding ongoing player contract disputes. With players Asanele Velebayi and Luke Baartman sidelined, Chiefs find themselves in a peculiar predicament, while Zwane grapples with the status of Liam Bern.
Contract Disputes and the PSL
According to sources, the Premier Soccer League’s (PSL) Dispute Resolution Chamber (DRC) hearing for Bern’s case, initially slated for last Tuesday, has been postponed. Bern seeks a declaration of free agency in a manner akin to Velebayi and Baartman from Cape Town Spurs, who are contesting these rulings.
Spurs have lodged an appeal with the South African Football Association (SAFA) Appeals Board, asserting that they are entitled to transfer fees for all three players, including Bern, despite the club's relegation to the ABC Motsepe Regional League.
Current PSL regulations stipulate that players become free agents when their club is relegated to the amateur-status ABC Motsepe League, nullifying existing professional contracts.
Zwane Discusses Player Status and Goalkeeping Selection
During a recent media training session at Princess Magogo Stadium, Zwane shared insights into Bern’s situation. “It is the same predicament as that faced by other clubs unable to field their players from Spurs,” he noted. “We will mirror the actions of the other club once they resume using theirs.”
AmaZulu is bracing for their upcoming Betway Premiership clash against Stellenbosch. Unfortunately, their recent performances have raised concerns, as they have conceded late goals in their last two outings.
On a positive note, the team welcomes back two goalkeepers: Darren Johnson, a newcomer from Chippa, and Richard Ofori, who has recovered from a concussion sustained during the MTN8 quarter-finals match against Stellenbosch in August. Ofori has returned to action in a competitive draw against Magesi.
Zwane now faces a selection challenge with all three goalkeepers—including Olwethu Mzimela—fit and actively training under goalkeeping coach Posnet Omony. “We have three number ones,” mentioned Zwane, reflecting on the competition for starting positions. “As it stands, they are all training well and creating a dilemma for me regarding the starting choice on Wednesday. Selection will depend on our opponent’s playing style and strategy.”
