Amazon Games has officially announced that its MMO, New World: Aeternum, is set to go offline on January 31, 2027. This decision comes as no complete surprise, particularly after the developer indicated no new content would be added following the Nighthaven seasonal update last year. In October 2025, Amazon made further cuts in its gaming division that impacted the MMO teams significantly.
The final day to play Aeternum on PC, PS5, and Xbox Series X|S will be January 31, 2027. As of today, January 15, the game is being delisted, although players who already own it can continue to play. Amazon has stated that the Nighthaven event will be extended until the game's eventual shutdown.
“We want to thank the players for your dedication and passion. We are grateful for the time spent crafting the world of Aeternum with you. Together we built something special. While we are saddened to say goodbye, we’re honored that we were able to share so much with the community,” the developer expressed in the announcement.
New World initially launched in September 2021 for PC, expanding to consoles in October 2024. The game had an impressive debut, hitting a peak of over 900,000 concurrent users. However, player numbers have since dwindled, and it now sees around 1,100 concurrent players on Steam.
Amazon confirmed it will continue to sell microtransactions for New World until July 19, 2026, at which point the Marks of Fortune currency, along with all other items, will be discontinued. No refunds will be issued for any remaining balance of Marks of Fortune.
While new content is off the table, Amazon indicated it would keep an eye on the game for bugs and performance issues to ensure a smooth experience as the game winds down. Amazon's recent history with game development has been rocky, with the free-to-play shooter Crucible canceled and a Lord of the Rings MMO halted due to contract disputes. There have also been cancellations, including a project named Breakaway.
A Bloomberg report noted a troubling pattern of management issues within Amazon's video game division. Despite promises from Amazon CEO Andy Jassy to strengthen their gaming endeavors back in 2021, tangible results remain elusive. However, Amazon continues to publish titles like Tomb Raider: Legacy of Atlantis and Tomb Raider: Catalyst.
