Animal Crossing: New Horizons Switch 2 Update: Worth the Upgrade?

As a fan eagerly anticipating the chance to use a megaphone in the Switch 2 Edition of Animal Crossing: New Horizons, I was disappointed by the inconsistent voice recognition feature. The intended purpose—to insult Chops from a distance—turned into a confusing experience as the megaphone often targeted the wrong villager.

Despite my initial excitement, the upgrade at £4.19 feels underwhelming. Recently, Nintendo surprised fans with a new patch, contradicting expectations of the 2.0 update being the last. This refresh includes a paid version that offers mouse support, a multiplayer increase to 12 players, and a boost in resolution—but sadly, no framerate enhancement.

The update also introduces a new hotel, allowing players to express their inner interior designers. However, having already experienced similar gameplay in the 2021 expansion, Happy Home Paradise, I must admit the novelty has faded slightly. Each day, new rooms open, inviting you to redecorate and earn currency for souvenirs.

I found myself surprisingly engaged despite the repetitive nature of tasks, courtesy of the game’s charming presentation and catchy hotel lobby music. The true highlight of this update lies in the smaller, practical fixes. Players can now craft multiple items simultaneously and draw materials from storage, streamlining the crafting process.

The communal island-building feature is a fun addition for players with friends, while Resetti's clean-up service, despite its cost, adds a helpful touch to gameplay. Interestingly, a new button feature allows players to hop—useful for landscaping or just adding a little fun as you vibrate amusingly in place.

Overall, the New Horizons 3.0 update doesn’t promise hundreds of hours of engagement, and whether it justifies the cost is subjective. What it does offer, however, is a reason to revisit this enchanting digital world. I’ve found joy in catching up on my island duties, even if the megaphone still leaves much to be desired.
