Arc Raiders' $40 Price Tag Aimed to Ensure Value for Players and Avoid Offending

Arc Raiders has emerged as one of the most notable success stories in gaming, achieving remarkable user engagement on January 4, 2026, marking the game's highest daily activity. Initially slated to be a free-to-play title, the game made a strategic pivot to a $40 price point prior to launch. This decision, according to Embark Studios head Patrick Soderlund, was influenced by the success of other games like Helldivers 2, which also adopted the $40 pricing structure.

In an interview, Soderlund stated, "We basically looked at games like Helldivers and other games and decided, 'OK, that is where we should sit.' We made that decision, whether that was right or wrong one can argue. I like the fact that the game is relatively affordable and that people can come in and try the game."

Soderlund emphasized that the $40 price helps avoid the game being perceived as an "offender" among players, especially since Arc Raiders is entirely multiplayer without a campaign mode. He expressed hope that players feel content with the value for money they receive, stating, "We'd rather make people feel like it's totally worth 40 bucks. I hope that people, given how much time they seem to spend in the game, feel like we've given them value for money."

The title has reportedly sold over 12 million copies across platforms, generating more than $350 million in revenue. Arc Raiders and its developer, Embark, fall under the umbrella of Nexon, a major player in the gaming industry. Despite the previous title, The Finals, not achieving the same success, Nexon indicated that it paved the way for Arc Raiders' impressive performance.

Moreover, the upcoming Marathon from Bungie will also adopt a similar $40 price strategy when it launches in March.

Due to Arc Raiders' skyrocketing popularity, Hollywood has begun exploring potential movie or TV adaptations; however, no agreements have been finalized thus far.

Despite its success, Arc Raiders has faced criticism regarding its use of artificial intelligence for creating voice lines. Soderlund defended this choice, urging critics to understand AI's potential benefits for developers and players alike.
