The world has gone blue once again. James Cameron's Avatar: Fire and Ash is dominating the box office, already surpassing the $1 billion global mark and sparking discussions about Avatar 4 and 5, which are ready for production pending approval. Meanwhile, 2023's Avatar: Frontiers of Pandora is also experiencing a resurgence thanks to this brand synergy.
Initially, the game, developed by Massive Entertainment and published by Ubisoft, struggled to capture a significant audience at launch, especially considering the success of The Way of Water, which grossed $2.3 billion globally in 2022. It was unexpected that Ubisoft's title would falter.
Fast-forward to early 2026, just weeks after the release of Fire and Ash and the new From the Ashes DLC, and the narrative has changed: SteamDB shows that the game averaged around 2,000 concurrent players. During the holiday season and into January 2026, it shattered its all-time peak player record multiple times, with a staggering high of 15,283 concurrent players logged. While data from Ubisoft Connect and console versions remain unavailable, social media indicates that the upswing in player count is not confined to Steam.
With Ubisoft announcing plans for further post-launch support including a much-anticipated third-person mode, New Game Plus, and a standalone DLC tied to the third movie, positive buzz surrounding the open-world action-adventure game has increased. The recent updates have fulfilled those promises, moving into a darker and more cinematic narrative with a new protagonist. Observers are pleased to see a “dead game” receiving a second opportunity to attract an audience, particularly given its link to a globally recognized franchise.
Ubisoft has a track record of reviving struggling games, with titles like For Honor being prime examples, alongside Rainbow Six Siege and The Division. Even Skull & Bones is making a comeback. The Na'vi-centric open-world game always had potential backed by its Disney connection, though its future seemed tenuous after the initial DLC plans were completed.
From my standpoint, the best aspect of the From the Ashes expansion (which I am currently exploring) is its fresh approach; it diverges from the existing formula, providing a more focused and intense experience in combat, stealth, and character abilities. Centered on a familiar warrior from the base game, So'lek, and the Ash clan of Na'vi, who stand against Eywa and the human invaders, the DLC articulates a distinct voice and resonates profoundly.
Regardless of opinions on the Avatar films, Frontiers of Pandora is among the most engaging open-world games of this generation, showcasing impressive technology worth experiencing. Over two years later, it seems to be finally achieving the recognition it deserves.
