In today's competitive gaming landscape, even the most extravagant marketing efforts can falter without favorable Steam review scores. According to a recent industry analysis, altering a game's review rating from 'Mixed' to 'Very Positive' can potentially triple its chances of succeeding in sales.
The gaming marketing firm Gamesight shared this finding in its latest Performance Marketing Playbook. They analyzed the conversion rates of 30 premium titles concerning their Steam review scores, revealing that all games with conversion rates exceeding 2% had positive review ratings of 80% or more.
A noteworthy case study within the report followed a game over a 21-month marketing period. The assessment indicated that higher review scores correlated with elevated conversion rates, peaking at over 7% when the game momentarily achieved an 'Overwhelmingly Positive' rating.
Gamesight also provided valuable insights on how developers can enhance their review scores. "Through our analysis, we often notice that implementing game patches, fixing bugs, and adding player-requested features significantly improve sentiment," explained Gamesight's data analyst Marlie Tandoc. This observation was evident in the case study, where the surge in positive ratings coincided with the addition of a highly anticipated feature.
Ultimately, Gamesight emphasizes that responding to player feedback is crucial for a game's triumph, just as pivotal as financial investment in marketing. However, there is one notable exception: free-to-play games exhibit little to no correlation between review scores and sales impact, as players can experience the game at no cost.
Several successful titles, like No Man's Sky and Helldivers 2, have effectively turned around their review ratings by making updates that align with player feedback. Furthermore, Steam has recently altered how it presents review scores, recognizing their significant influence on a game's performance.
