Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 developer Sandfall underestimated just how much players would engage with the game's various sidequests and optional content, leading to an easier-than-expected final boss fight.
Upon its release last year, Clair Obscur quickly captured the attention of gamers. As Sandfall's first title, it exceeded expectations, drawing players into its world and characters. Many gamers dove into optional side content and dungeons, leveling up significantly during their adventures.
As a consequence, when it came time for the final battle—no spoilers here—players were far stronger than Sandfall anticipated, rendering the encounter less challenging than intended.
"The only thing I regret is not making it clearer that if you want the intended difficulty for the boss, you have to beat it now," said Michel Nohra, the lead game designer. "I underestimated how early players would complete side content before finishing the main story, which disappointed those looking for a challenging encounter."
Nohra explained that players often choose to complete side quests before finishing the storyline, which can lessen their motivation for extras afterward. This observation was an area of concern for some who sought a more challenging final encounter.
