Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 developer Sandfall has announced a focus on personal creativity for their next game, prioritizing what the team believes is "cool" rather than succumbing to external pressures.
Following its acclaimed release last year, which culminated in winning the prestigious Game of the Year at The Game Awards 2025, expectations are high for Sandfall's next move.
However, Sandfall's chief operating officer François Meurisse emphasized that this pressure is "not so important" to the team. In a conversation with Edge magazine, he shared that the studio is excited to explore new ideas, driven by five additional years of experience.
Lead writer Jennifer Svedberg-Yen candidly expressed her tendencies as a "people pleaser," acknowledging the weight of fan expectations. Nevertheless, she affirmed that the creative team's guiding principle will always be their own taste and enjoyment rather than trying to cater to a broad audience.
“I’ve seen too many TV shows and books be swayed trying to please a lot of people, and in the process you end up losing the heart of what’s there,” Svedberg-Yen remarked.
She stressed the importance of trusting instincts and remaining faithful to the studio's vision.
Last year, the success of Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 was celebrated by French President Emmanuel Macron, marking pride for Montpellier and France. Recently, Sandfall Interactive also released a new expansion for the game, providing additional features that some fans have found challenging.
Further insights were shared by actor Maxence Cazorla, who discussed his role in bringing characters to life and the personal significance of the game.
