It's been an eventful year for a game that's been around for over a decade. Recently, we posed the question: “Is a new Witcher 3 expansion really on the horizon this year?” This inquiry was fueled by comments from a reliable source, Borys Nieśpielak, a prominent figure in the Polish gaming industry. Following his insights, a Noble Securities analyst added to the speculation this week.
New information regarding this much-anticipated DLC appears to have emerged. According to reports, CD Projekt's developers have expressed past interest in delving into the region of Zerrikania. While this information isn't entirely new, its resurfacing suggests that CD Projekt Red may indeed be preparing something significant related to the game.
Having explored the Witcher books recently, I recall Zerrikania as a vast human realm located east of both the Northern Kingdoms and the Nilfgaardian Empire. This area features two major forests—one within a deep canyon and another at the foothills of the Fiery Mountains—making it an ideal setting for an extensive open-world DLC.
Zerrikania has been lightly referenced in the games. For instance, if you (or Geralt) don't invite Letho to Kaer Morhen at the end of the “Ghosts of the Past” quest in the main storyline, Letho mentions he will escape to Zerrikania. Additionally, players can acquire Zerrikanian outfits in the free DLC that offers an alternative look for Ciri. Could these mentions hint at future content?
Given the lore from the books—and possibly a season of the Netflix series—dragons are likely to play a role in this area. The culture there reveres these creatures as deity-like entities but has had issues with them causing chaos, which would warrant a Witcher (or several) to intervene.
As for CD Projekt Red, they have not launched a new title since the expansion of Cyberpunk 2077, Phantom Liberty, released in late 2023. However, Cyberpunk 2077 did make its way to the Switch 2 upon the console’s debut in 2025, achieving remarkable sales. Against all odds after its troubled launch, it continues to thrive, surpassing 35 million sales and holding a consistent position on Steam's bestsellers list.
Previously, CD Projekt Red remarked that they “do not comment on rumors or speculation” regarding the Witcher 3 DLC conjecture— a typical stance for the company. Thus, it's unclear whether these rumors hold any truth or if they are mere daydreams. Stay tuned for more updates!
