Alexandre Amancio, the creative director behind Assassin's Creed Unity and Assassin's Creed Revelations, has expressed his views on the current state of AAA game development, suggesting that it is fundamentally flawed. Now serving as a senior vice president at FunPlus, Amancio advocates for smaller development teams as a potential solution for the industry's troubles.
In a recent conversation with GamesIndustry.biz, he stated, "AAA studios often believe that the solution to a problem is merely adding more personnel. However, this approach often leads to inefficiencies and confusion. Thus, I contend that the future of AAA gaming lies in smaller teams."
Amancio outlined how smaller teams can successfully manage larger projects by referring to the development of Assassin's Creed: Black Flag as a hypothetical scenario. He explained, "Consider the naval system in Assassin's Creed: Black Flag. This feature can be entrusted to a co-development studio because it is a self-contained project. With the right guidance, they can fully focus on enhancing the gameplay while ensuring stable integration with the main game."
He also emphasized the importance of constraints in the creative process, stating, "Constraints are essential for great art, whether they are real or artificial. Our creativity often thrives under limitations, forcing us to explore beyond our initial ideas. Financial or technical constraints can spark innovative solutions, leading to mastery and excellence."
While Ubisoft has not yet revealed the next installment in the Assassin's Creed series, developments are underway for various projects, including a reported remake of Black Flag titled Resynced. In addition, a mobile game named Assassin's Creed Jade and a game under the codename Hexe are also in the works, along with a possible multiplayer project called Assassin's Creed Invictus.
