Meta has made headlines by shuttering the internal developers of Oculus Studios, affecting Twisted Pixel Games, Sanzaru Games, and Armature Studio.
Recent reports from outlets like The New York Times indicate that significant cuts were made to Meta's Reality Labs sector, which is dedicated to first-party VR game development. On Tuesday, numerous developers from the impacted studios shared their job loss experiences on X and other social media platforms.
Industry confirmations from UploadVR have verified that Twisted Pixel Games, Sanzaru Games, and Armature Studios were all integral parts of this restructuring effort. In a statement, Tracy Clayton from Meta explained that these layoffs were necessary for the company to shift focus toward wearables, such as their Ray-Ban Meta AI glasses.
This move marks a significant reduction in Meta’s AAA first-party development capabilities for the Quest VR headsets. All three studios were well-established entities with rich histories before their acquisition.
Twisted Pixel Games originally gained recognition for Xbox Live Arcade titles like 'Splosion Man and Comic Jumper: The Adventures of Captain Smiley, and most recently, launched Marvel's Deadpool VR in November 2025.
Sanzaru Games was recognized for creating Asgard's Wrath 2, bundled free with the Meta Quest 3, in addition to its work on the original Asgard's Wrath and several Sony 3D platformer spin-offs.
Armature Studio, comprised of former Retro Studios developers, is best known for the Xbox One exclusive ReCore, with their latest title being an acclaimed VR version of Resident Evil 4 released in 2021.
Despite the closings, developers such as Beat Games, creators of Beat Saber, and Camouflaj, known for Batman: Arkham Shadow, remain operational. However, this restructuring poses a considerable challenge for VR game development, given Meta's significant role in the virtual reality landscape.
