Roblox Introduces Facial Age Checks to Enhance Child Safety in Gaming

Roblox has launched a global implementation of facial age verification today, aimed at enhancing safety for its young users following considerable criticism. This move follows a partial rollout of the technology that began in December.

According to a blog post by Roblox's chief safety officer Matt Kaufman and VP of user discovery Rajiv Bhatia, users will soon encounter these new age checks as a prerequisite for accessing the platform's chat feature.

The blog outlines: "As the first major online gaming platform to mandate facial age checks for users of all ages to interact via chat, this effort represents our next step toward establishing a gold standard in communication safety. It facilitates age-based interactions, ensuring a positive, age-appropriate experience for users and limiting chat between adults and users younger than 16."

Statistics from the blog indicate that during the partial rollout in Australia, New Zealand, and the Netherlands, more than half of daily active users successfully completed the age verification process.

For users under nine years old, parental consent will be required for chat functionality. Users aged 13 and older can communicate with others aged nine to seventeen through what Roblox is dubbing their "Trusted Connections Feature." This feature imposes chat restrictions between different age brackets. Users over 13 can verify their ages via ID.

Roblox emphasizes the importance of user privacy, stating that images used for age verification are deleted immediately after the check is performed. A help page dedicated to the Trusted Connections feature mentions that users may occasionally need to restart the age verification process. Should the system incorrectly categorize a user, an appeal process allows for correction through real-world identification or parental controls.

These measures come in light of heightened scrutiny aimed at Roblox over child safety issues. The platform faced legal action from Louisiana last year regarding its safety protocols. Roblox's CEO had previously remarked that parents uneasy with their children engaging in the platform should deny access. This controversy escalated following a poorly received interview where the CEO referred to the game’s predator issue as an "opportunity" for the platform.

While these initiatives are a move towards better safety, instances of the facial recognition technology being bypassed by younger users have emerged. During the UK’s recent online safety initiative, some individuals successfully used imagery from the game Death Stranding 2 to fool the facial recognition software. The effectiveness of these new measures in ensuring a safer environment for kids remains to be seen.
