Near the end of October 2025, Rockstar terminated the employment of more than thirty developers in the UK and Canada, citing "gross misconduct" as the reason. The Independent Workers' Union of Great Britain (IWGB) has accused Rockstar of union busting, alleging that the layoffs targeted workers who were organizing with the union. The dispute has escalated into a legal battle in the UK courts.
As highlighted by Video Games Chronicle, both parties appeared in court this past week. The IWGB requested "interim relief" for the terminated employees, which would reinstate them on Rockstar's payroll and help maintain their visa statuses. A decision on this request is expected by the end of the week.
The IWGB has committed to advocating for the affected employees, regardless of the court's ruling, while Rockstar insists that the dismissals were justified due to breaches of company policy.
"We have consistently made clear that we took necessary action against a group of individuals across the UK and Canada who discussed highly confidential information... This was a breach of long-standing and well-understood confidentiality policies," a Rockstar spokesperson stated.
Concerns have been raised about the alleged confidentiality violations, particularly regarding Grand Theft Auto 6. Reports suggest that the involved employees shared information about changes to Rockstar's internal communication channels, which restrict personal discussions. Additionally, Rockstar's stringent internal security measures reportedly limit access to work emails to in-office conditions only.
This legal case may hinge on whether Rockstar can substantiate its claims that the employees disclosed sensitive information in violation of their employment agreements. The situation has garnered significant international attention, with UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer and MP Chris Murray promising to investigate further. However, the resolution of this legal conflict may unfold over an extended period.
