A recent patent filed by Sony reveals an innovative idea for an AI 'ghost' that could lend a hand to players encountering difficulties in their games.
This concept, noted by various sources, outlines an 'overlay' of the player’s character that would showcase actions for players, such as solving puzzles or providing example controller input sequences, thus enabling them to move forward in their gaming journey.
In addition to demonstrating actions, the AI 'ghost' would also engage in conversations with the player's character, offering guidance or instructions. At times, it may even play through challenging segments on behalf of the player, marking a significant evolution in PlayStation's existing Game Help feature on PS5.
The patent further details a mode-switching system, providing four user-friendly options: Story Mode, Combat Mode, Exploration Mode, and Full Game Mode.
The filing states, "Although video game technology has seen many advances, some players find themselves in need of assistance. Games become very complicated, so players who are not experts oftentimes quit playing or find it hard to complete tasks." It emphasizes the time-consuming nature of seeking out external guides and resources for assistance.
Should these AI Ghost helpers come to fruition, they would effectively be trained on existing footage of PlayStation games to ensure accurate support.
While assistance in gaming isn't a new concept, with PS5's Game Help and Microsoft's Copilot AI, developments in AI continue to be a hot topic within the industry.
According to a 2024 report from Unity, about 62% of studios using its tools have implemented AI at some stage in game development, with a significant focus on animation. A recent survey indicated an increase in AI adoption across Japanese game companies, underscoring the vital role AI is poised to play in the future of gaming production.
