The Elder Scrolls Online is set for a major transformation in 2026. Developer ZeniMax Online Studios is adopting a seasonal model that will make all content updates available for free, moving away from the traditional paid chapter expansions.
For years, ESO has relied on annual paid chapters that introduced new regions, storylines, and occasionally new classes and systems. However, in a significant shift announced in 2024, the focus will now be on a seasonal approach. This change allows for quicker implementation of fresh ideas and gameplay enhancements to the nearly 12-year-old MMORPG.

Each season will be unique, with ZeniMax Online emphasizing the flexibility to refine and iterate on core game elements.
Breaking from the Chapter Tradition
Under the new seasonal system, future content updates will be free. Players can expect to receive new zones, storylines, and systems without additional charges. There will be four seasons each year, each lasting three months.
“In general, the things that were rolled out as chapters, those will just be game updates from now on,” stated executive producer Susan Kath.
The transformation begins with Update 49 in March, integrating previous premium DLCs into the base game and simultaneously releasing it across all platforms.
Introducing Season 0
April will mark the launch of Season 0, which will feature a major overhaul for the Dragonknight class and introduce the new experimental event zone, The Night Market. Designed to challenge players, this PvE zone will encourage collaboration and include rewards like an upgradable house.
This initial season will also introduce a new battle pass system titled Tamriel Tomes, replacing the previous daily challenges. Players will complete weekly and seasonal goals to unlock cosmetic rewards and currencies.
A Seasonal Roadmap
ZeniMax Online has outlined its 2026 roadmap, which promises to evolve over the year. Season 1 is projected for late summer, bringing Thieves Guild content and new world events, while Season 2 will be winter-focused, introducing solo dungeons and more.
While players have long awaited cross-play functionality, ZeniMax acknowledges the complexities involved and advises that it is on the agenda, though not imminent.
Additionally, players can anticipate quality-of-life enhancements preceding Season 0, including account-wide outfit slots and improved character development features.
“We want to be building what's important to you, the players…” – Nick Giacomini
As the studio aims to establish ESO as a long-term MMORPG, further details regarding Season 0 and its innovations will be revealed in upcoming months.
