When Cyberpunk 2077 was reintroduced with its 2.0 update and the Phantom Liberty expansion, female V emerged as the new face of the game. Over two years later, this choice still stands, sparking curiosity among fans regarding the fate of male V, who was central to the original marketing campaign.
If you possess a physical copy of the game from its 2020 release, male V graces the cover. As the game has undergone significant improvements and is now recognized as one of the best titles in recent times, he seems to have been sidelined, leading to discussions and theories online regarding the reason behind this shift.
"Male V had whole base game marketing for himself," said Cyberpunk 2 creative director Igor Sarzynski. "One game for each V."
The change was reportedly balanced at 50/50 for the Phantom Liberty content. While many might suspect there were extensive discussions, player feedback indicates that both male and female V are enjoyed equally within the community.
Choosing between male or female V extends beyond aesthetics and voice work; it also influences various romantic storylines within the game. Veterans suggest experiencing multiple playthroughs to fully appreciate the diverse narratives and relationships available.
While some players argue female V provides a richer narrative experience due to unique romances, both character options feature impressive storytelling and voice acting. Yet, as Sarzynski noted, the decision to pivot in marketing direction was likely not as complex as some fans might think.
